Thanks for the thoughtful reflections as always, Rick. I'm not even sure I intended that introduction as a dichotomy so thanks for pointing that out.

This was a great read about your morning routine that’s rooted in so much of your own experience trying it out over the years! I think the sunlight thing is so interesting, over the past year, I’ve been waking up without an alarm (and mediocre blinds) and I’ve found that my circadian rhythm adjusts with the length of days. Also loved the story about your father at the beginning! This is the same guy who jumped out of a plane for his birthday right 😂

Great guide encapsulating the "best practices" for a morning routine, Tai. I've tried on and off most of them, but always find the one of going out for a walk early in the morning difficult. Do you know if looking out the window has the same effect? Or does looking through glass make a difference?

And also, with your previous writing on productivity it made me think, what if you do an open-eyes meditation, looking out the window? That would be 2x1 😂

I think the window slightly decreases the effect but you can always use a light meter to verify. Getting natural light through a window is certainly better than nothing. I'll have to tell you about the Wind Horse meditation some time. 😆

Thank you Tai! I had never thought about the light meter, great suggestion. And you're right, in the end it's better than nothing.

I definitely want to hear about that meditation!! 😂😂

I thrive on and need morning routines, especially exercise, meditation and writing. but your article brings up an interesting dichotomy when it talks about what makes you leap out of bed in the morning and then morning routines. I’ve been noticing and experimenting with letting the routines slide sometimes in favour of the thing I can’t wait to start doing. Often I love the routines but occasionally I’ll have a project going that I love even more, and it’s a delightful thing to get up in the early hours of the morning and have focused time to devote to creative, professional, or whimsical pursuits. Maybe there is a new book in this. “Do what you love and the habits will follow.” ?
